Here is a quick check-list of items you may want to consider when planning to start a new business:

Will you incorporate a company or operate as a sole proprietor? (let’s discuss your structure)
Will you have partners? (let’s discuss partner / shareholder agreements)
Are you married? (income splitting flexibility may be desirable)
Will you have employees? (employment agreements, register for payroll accounts with CRA)
Will you be taking a loan from a bank, or other lending source? (do you understand what types of security you may be required to provide?)
Will you need to charge tax (HST/GST) on your goods services? (register for GST/HST with CRA)
Do you need to rent office, retail or industrial space? (your lawyer should do a lease review)
Do you need any licenses or permits for your type of business?
Have you made contact with a lawyer yet? (hint – my contact info is here 902.482.7021)?
Have you made contact with an accountant yet?
Have you considered what types of insurance you’ll need?
Will you be seeking outside investors / raising capital? (If yes, you’d better pay attention to securities regulations or risk being shut down and fined heavily)
